WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A COUNSELLING SESSION?

In a counseling session the therapist and a client would discuss the goals and treatment tools and how to bring about improvement. A CBT approach focuses on the difficulties in the ‘here and now’. The therapist and a client would develop a shared view of the individual’s issue. This would be to identify ways of empowering the client to attribute improvement in their problems to their own efforts with support and collaboration.

In a session the therapist would assess the clients issue to develop an understanding of the presenting problem. In CBT we consider that a person’s thoughts and feelings relate to their behaviour and vice versa. During time of stress people can think differently about themselves. These thoughts can become extreme and unhelpful. The therapist would help each person identify and change their extreme thinking and unhelpful behaviours. This often results in a major improvement in how the person feels and lives.

Often the client would be asked to practice behaviours based on the new agreed approach and this would be regularly evaluated to ensure its effectiveness, acceptability and success.
